Description
A favorite of mine from the Islands is the King Protea. I have always loved it in arrangements, especially when paired with the lovely and graceful eucalyptus. This amazing blossom is always the focal point of any floral arrangement because of its size and feathery appearance.
The largest of the protea blossoms are the King protea, measuring several inches across. Many varieties of protea are grown commercially in Hawaii even though they are a relative newcomer to the flower industry there. These beauties are originally from South America. They adapted well to the cooler, higher elevations in the islands, especially on Maui and the Big Island. Many varieties of these exotic beauties have very thick, woody stems that are almost like small tree trunks, and they are quite heavy. There is nothing delicate about this, yet they have a graceful appearance all the same. They last for weeks when cut for floral arrangements.
Na pua o' Hawaii -- the flowers of Hawaii are always on my mind and in my heart.
This is a digital work of art using a combination of watercolor and dry brush techniques. Watermark will not appear on purchased image.
