Description
Beautiful 'Ohi'a tree in full bloom near the Volcanoes National Park visitor center at Kilauea volcano, seen on a recent trip back home to the islands.
These amazing feathery blossoms are widely used in haku lei and other ceremonial events. The nectar from these flowers provide vital food for the endangered native honey creeper birds, the 'Apapane and 'Akohekohe.
'Ohi'a is the most common native tree species in the main islands. It is also one the first plants to grow in recent lava flows. Unlike many other Hawaiian plants, it can live in close proximity to toxic volcanic gases by closing the pores of its leaves. The 'ohi'a is found as a bushy shrub that will eventually grow into a tall stately tree.
