Description
Lahaina, Maui was made the capital of the Kingdom of Hawaii by King Kamehameha in 1802 and remained the capital until 1845. It was also a popular whaling port for many years starting around 1820 when over 100 ships would visit the port annually, especially when the humpbacks were present in what was called the "Lahaina Roads" channel. 1846 saw a record of over 750 ships stopping by to hunt whales. Ships would also resupply with fresh water, fruits and vegetables, and the sailors would frequent the local grog shops.
A trademark of old Lahaina town is the rock sea wall along Front Street. Where there are now shops and restaurants, plantation style homes used to be seen along the shoreline. Front Street was historically known as Alanui Moi (King's Road) when Kamehameha III made this is residence. This scene is very much like what Lahaina would have looked like during those years. The island of Molokai can be seen in the background.
Lahaina means "relentless heat" as the area is quite dry, receiving less than 12 inches of rain annually, and doesn't receive as many cooling trade winds as other parts of the island.
Update: Lahaina has now been destroyed in a catastrophic wild fire. All proceeds from the sale of this print will go to benefit the victims of this tragedy.
This digital work of art was created using a combination of oil and dry brush methods. Watermark will not appear on purchased image.

Oh my, you captured it well. Bittersweet to remember beautiful Lahaina. Here in the islands we grieve but are hopeful she will rise again.
J Marielle replied:
Mahalo nui Kris. I am still heartbroken over this. I have family and friends who are still displaced and living with other family members across the island. Thank you again for your lovely comment and for your Aloha spirit!

This is a beautiful and relaxing island scene Jane!!
J Marielle replied:
Thank you so much, Al. This has always been a very special place with such rich cultural history. It breaks my heart to see the entire town reduced to ashes. The Hawaiian spirit will always live on! Thanks again!

Love this very much Jane dear! Beautiful light and depiction of old Hawai'i. Much aloha to you and best wishes that you are doing well.
J Marielle replied:
Mahalo nui, Heidi. I had a great time doing this one. I remember walking along the old sea wall in Lahaina in the 70s, seeing the Carthaginian at the docks and just loving the vibe of old Hawaii. That was the inspiration for this one Thank you so very much!!

Thank you very much, Jenny! That means a great deal to me coming from such an accomplished and talented artist like you! I was always a Kihei gal (25 years). I always loved the old Lahaina before things got so developed. Beautiful place!
