Description
Taken on a recent trip back home, these beautiful Hilo Sundance Plumeria were found blooming along the Hamakua Coast near Laupahoehoe.
In Hawaii plumeria are called “Melia,” meaning backyard flower. Plumeria’s history in Hawaii is inseparably connected with the cultural and spiritual history of the islands. The very first plumeria were brought to the islands by the sea voyaging Polynesians who originally settled in these islands over 1600 years ago. Several additional varieties were introduced in the mid-1800s.
Plumeria are a wonderfully fragrant blossom frequently used as a lei flower or worn in the hair. There are over 20 varieties of blossoms -- with colors ranging from white with yellow centers all the way to deep maroon. Several varieties of pink and coral colors are among the most popular landscaping trees.
Watermark will not appear on purchased image.
