Description
This photo was taken on a recent trip to Alaska and Yukon Territories.
Emerald Lake is near Carcross, in the Yukon Territories, Canada. It is a sightseeing destination located along the highway north of the community of Carcross. The lookout point provides an opportunity to enjoy some great views of this beautiful turquoise-green shallow lake and of the mountain ranges beyond. Fireweed blossoms in abundance along the highway during the summer months.
The color of the lake is a rarity and attracts many to the location. The green color is the result of sunlight reflecting off of what is called marl. Marl is the white calcium carbonate that settles on the lake floor. It is created by mixing the limestone remains from the ice age with the calcium in the alpine water.

Thank you so much. It was gorgeous -- I've never seen a lake with marl before and couldn't believe how beautiful it was. Thanks again!
