Description
One of my favorite places on the island of Maui is along the remote, narrow and winding, not to mention often challenging road to Hana. About half way to old Hana town is the Ke'anae Peninsula. The coastline is jagged black lava rock that is in stark contract to the crystal clear azure of the ocean. There is no sand along this entire stretch of coastline. As a result the sea is absolutely clear.
This was a favorite picnic place where I would find a little spot in the shade under a spreading pandanus tree. The wave action here is completely mesmerizing and it was hard to leave at the end of the day. It was a wonderful place to contemplate the amazing beauty of the islands and the power of the ocean. I never did experience a calm sea here no matter how many times I visited.
There is nothing much on this remote peninsula -- just a very small wooden church, some taro fields and a dozen or so small bungalows scatted far and wide. On an island where the population has exploded over the past couple decades, it makes for a wonderful get away where there is still the feel and charm of the old Hawaii I miss so much.
